Why Getting Your Bits Checked Is Self-Care, Not Scary

Let’s be honest, for many of us the thought of a sexual health check-up is about as appealing as doing our tax. There’s that awkward moment in the waiting room, the fear of judgment, or the little voice saying, “I’m fine, I don’t need this.”

Here’s the truth: regular check-ups aren’t just about finding problems. They’re about protecting your future health, giving you peace of mind, and staying connected to your own body.

For women and people with a vulva, that might mean pap smears, STI screenings, pelvic exams, and breast checks. For men and people with a penis, it’s testicular exams, prostate checks, and STI screenings too. It’s about you taking control of your health, not waiting until something goes wrong.

We need to break the stigma - a sexual health check isn’t an admission of risky behaviour. It’s an act of responsibility, courage, and self-respect. Just like you’d get your blood pressure or teeth checked, your sexual health deserves the same attention.

And if the thought still makes you nervous? Take a friend for support, book with a clinic that feels safe and inclusive, and remember: these professionals have seen and heard it all. To them, your body is not a shock - it’s their everyday work.

Your body is worth protecting. Your pleasure is worth protecting. And nothing says “I value myself” like making that appointment. It may just save your life!

It did mine - but that's another post to write..
